HIDE COLOURS

Hide colours can vary slightly from batch to batch depending on the tanning process, hide thickness, and natural grain. Lighting may also affect how colours appear. For example, a 3 ounce cream cow hide may look slightly different than a 5 ounce cream cow hide.

These hides are natural, rugged materials, not factory-made for perfect consistency. We embrace subtle variations in colour, texture, and occasional marks from the animal’s life, honouring the material and taking pride in not wasting what nature provides.

Each hide is carefully inspected and we select the best pieces for every order, ensuring every product remains durable and fully functional while still reflecting the natural character of real hide.

HIDE WEIGHT (AKA THICKNESS)

- 3 Ounce -

A lightweight and highly workable option that many makers appreciate for its flexibility and ease of sewing. It remains durable, breathable, and fully functional, while offering greater comfort and mobility for certain items. This weight is often preferred for projects where dexterity, flexibility, and lighter weight are beneficial.

Standout Features;

Easier to sew than 5 ounce hide

Lightweight, which can be helpful for long treks or extended wear

Ideal for functional items that require flexibility & dexterity

Well suited for hide upper moccasins & mittens where puncture resistance is less critical

Durable and breathable, though slightly less puncture-resistant than heavier hides

- 5 OUNCE -

A thicker, more robust option that provides excellent durability while remaining breathable and functional for all of your adventures. Many makers prefer the 5 ounce weight when added strength and puncture resistance are important, particularly in areas that experience more wear and constant, direct contact with the elements.

Standout Features;

More puncture-resistant than 3 ounce hide

Well suited for moccasin lowers used in both summer and winter

Provides added durability in high-contact areas

Durable, breathable, and long lasting due to the tough, thick nature of this weight

Slightly more difficult to sew due to the increased thickness

SPLIT VS. FULL GRAIN

Full-grain hide has one "smooth" side of the hide, retaining the natural grain and fibers, which makes it stronger, more durable, and more moisture-resistant.

Split-grain hide is more "fuzzy" and is typically softer and more flexible, though not as tough as full grain.

Full grain is often preferred where maximum durability and weather resistance are needed, while split grain can be a good choice where flexibility, lighter weight, or a softer feel is desired.
